This is a picture of youth ministry

Yesterday I had the privilege of speaking in Hattiesburg, MS at our “Speaking to Teenagers” Seminar (with my friend Duffy Robbins).

As always, we had a blast! I love this day of training because it’s so easy to spot the youth workers who are hungry to learn. There’s a lot of content in this seminar that’s peppered with a ton of laughter. It’s really difficult for me to describe the joy I have for this event.

I met a bunch of incredible youth workers! One youth worker’s story grabbed my heart, and I left thinking, “He’s a good picture of the face of youth ministry.” His name is Jared Beard and he retired (after 20 years) of working in the Customs Department (both domestically and oversees). He felt God’s call to retire and pursue youth ministry. Since he retired, he’s been in full-time ministry for 4 years (I’m guessing he’s in the neighborhood of late 40′s…early 50′s) and he’s doing a GREAT job! He came to our seminar with some of his team (pictured above).

I think a lot of people have an image of youth ministry being a “young person’s game” and it’s not an accurate image. Sure, there are a lot of 20-somethings that are doing great ministry, but there are also a lot of 50-somethings that are clearly following the call of Jesus and loving teenagers and their families and trying to help them grow spiritually. I’m grateful for people like Jared…who heard God’s call (later in life) and obeyed.

We have a team of 12 and only 2 are in their 20′s. The rest of us are older in our 40′s and 50′s

My pastor asked me to be our paid youth coordinator after I retired from the military. I told him I was too old (57), too tired, too busy, and too uncool. He asked me to think about it, but I 100% knew I would decline. Then as I walked out of church, a voice deep in me said “Yes.” Everytime I said no, it said yes. God was calling me. I spent 8 great years as the paid youth minister and still am very active in the youth miniistry.

This is awesome. My team ranges from the very early 20′s well into the 40′s and God uses each of them in a very different yet significant way! It isn’t just a young person’s game, there aren’t ranks of ministry that you “grow out of”, there’s only God’s call on your life.

    Blessings,

    Jeremiah

I love seeing this Doug! After about two years in youth ministry I realized (I think at your prompting) that we needed more adults on our leadership team. I stopped looking for the 20 year olds and started pursuing married couples in their 40′s and 50′s. I knew that our students did not have a clear view of love and marriage and was hoping that with this new influx on mature leadership we could help present marriage in a positive light. It has been amazing to see our students respond so well to the “older” leaders. I think that students are longing for positive leadership in their lives and the “parent” figure can present that in a better light.

I might say: an equally valuable, but different light… rather than “better”. There are many amazing leaders that span the ages. It’s a shame to label a persons ability to lead well as “better” based on age, it limits our view on a persons potential.

I’m about to turn 35 and just now beginning to feel as if I know what I am doing. For the first 10 years of ministry the youth ministry ran me now I run the youth ministry.

That’s a good phrase, “For the first 10 years of ministry the youth ministry ran me now I run the youth ministry.” I will steal that for sure! :)

I am In the process of retiring after 24 years in the military and have been called to full-time youth ministry. One week after hanging up the uniform for good (Nov 5) I will assume the Youth Pastor position at a church in Bastrop, TX. Praise Him!
